As junior game developers, what platforms offer a viable source of income? Our team has asked ourselves this critical question. The game industry landscape is challenging, and as someone nearing graduation, the risk of unemployment is a reality we must confront. In this post, our team explores potential avenues that could enable us to thrive as independent developers, generating enough income to focus on our passion projects in the long term—or sustain us until a more prestigious position in the industry becomes available.
We consider Roblox as a potential source of income.
Roblox offers unique advantages that make it a strong choice for game developers, especially those starting out:
Ease of Use
Roblox Studio is beginner-friendly, with minimal setup, free hosting, and built-in tools for monetization. Publishing and updating games takes just a few clicks—no tedious reviews or fees like on Steam.
Monetization Made Simple
Developers can earn real money through Roblox’s streamlined system using Robux, its virtual currency. In 2023, Roblox paid creators $741 million via its DevEx program.
Massive Audience
With over 77 million daily active users, Roblox provides unparalleled reach for feedback, engagement, and revenue.
However, while Roblox offers compelling advantages, success on the platform isn’t guaranteed. Developers often need to invest in advertising to stand out among the competition. Additionally, Roblox’s revenue model takes a significant cut: 30% from in-game earnings and 50% when cashing out Robux.
